Breast reduction

Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty), is a commonly performed procedure designed to reduce the size and to reshape the breasts. The aim of the surgery is to make the breasts more symmetrical or proportionate to the body’s natural shape and size. Excessively large breasts can result in a number of health related problems including back, neck and shoulder discomfort and poor posture. It can also cause difficulty with sporting activities, clothing and can induce a feeling of self consciousness, leading to unhappiness.

There are several breast reduction techniques that are suitable for different shapes and sizes of breasts. Factors such as the age of the individual, skin elasticity and the degree of droopiness of the breasts will determine the type of operation used. Our Surgeons are experienced in the different techniques and will recommend what might work best in your case.

Your consultant will give you impartial advice and have a thorough discussion with you on the nature of the surgery, your suitability for it and the type of breast reduction surgery that can produce the optimum result.

You will be fully informed about the implications of having breast reduction surgery including the pattern of scarring and any possible short-term or long-term complications. The procedure is normally carried out under general anaesthesia, takes two to three hours to perform and involves one or two nights stay in hospital. Time off work is variable but can range from two to three weeks. The final decision to have surgery is your own personal choice.
