Breast enlargement
Breast augmentation or breast enlargement surgery is a procedure
which involves the placing of an artificial implant immediately
behind the breast tissue, or, if necessary, underneath the muscle
that lies beneath the breast. The inserted breast implant pushes
and projects the natural breast tissue forward, giving a fuller and
larger breast appearance.
This procedure is performed on women of different ages who wish
to enhance their breast size and shape. The implant is usually
inserted through a short inconspicuous incision that runs in the
natural fold under the breast. There are other approaches that the
consultant can discuss with you.
Your consultant will give you impartial advice and have a thorough
discussion with you on the nature of the surgery, your suitability
for it and the type, shape and size of implant that can produce the
optimum result. You will be fully informed about the implications
of having breast augmentation and any possible short or long-term
complications.
The procedure is normally carried out under general anaesthesia and
involves an overnight stay in hospital. Time off work is an
individual matter and variable but can range from one to two weeks.
The final decision to have surgery is your own personal choice.
